재범요인과 범죄유형별 특성: 직업훈련프로그램에 참여한 남성 교도소 수형자 대상

본 연구는 직업훈련프로그램에 참여한 208명 남성 교도소 수형자들을 대상으로 범죄유형에 따른 특성과 재범요인을 살펴보았다. 구체적으로, 폭행/상해, 강간, 살인, 절도/사기 집단의 배경 및 심리적 특성과 MMPI 임상척도들의 특성을 비교해 보았다. 또한 어떤 요인들이 재범행위와 관련되어 있는지 조사하였다. 나아가 MMPI 검사에서 부적응 상태를 보인 수형자들과 그렇지 않은 남성들을 분류하고, 정신건강문제에 영향을 미치는 요소들을 확인하였다. 연구결과에 따르면, 절도/사기 유형이 범죄경력자들을 가장 많이 보유하고 있었으며, 살인집단에서 전과자들의 수가 가장 적었다. 아동학대, 부모간 폭력을 목격한 남성들의 비율이 가장 높은 집단은 폭행/상해 유형이다. 재범을 예측하는 요인은 범죄유형(절도/사기 범죄), 사회지지, 공격성인 것으로 밝혀졌다. MMPI 임상척도 집단평균에서 강간집단은 우울증, 히스테리, 여성성, 편집증, 강박증, 분열증에서 유의미하게 가장 높은 점수를 나타냈다. 또 강간범들의 10%가 넘는 남성들이 건강염려증, 히스테리, 편집증, 분열증에서 정상범주를 벗어나 있었다. 정신건강상 적응과 부적응 상태를 차별화하는 변수는 범죄유형(강간 범죄), 공격성, 자기효능감으로 확인되었다. 하지만 재범과 초범자들을 구분하는 성격특성은 하나도 없었다. 이러한 결과들을 기초로 재범방지 효과를 높이기 위한 개입방안들이 제시되었다.

Abstract

This study explored the risk factors of recidivism and different characteristics of men depending on types of offense, based on an analysis of 208 prisoners who participated in vocational training programs. Specifically, this study compared characteristics in terms of demographics, background, psychological and MMPI clinical scales among assault/injury, rape, murder, theft/fraud offending groups. In addition, this study examined the factors affecting recidivism. Furthermore, this study classified maladjusted or adjusted prison inmates based on the MMPI clinical scale scores, and identified factors associated with psychopathology. The results showed that the theft/fraud group was the mostly likely to have men with a criminal record, whereas the murderer group was the least likely to have a criminal record. Men in assault/injury group were the mostly likely to have had a history of child abuse and who have witnessed violence between their parents. Predictors of recidivism were criminal type (theft/fraud group), social support, and aggressiveness. In terms of MMPI mean scores, rape offenders had the highest scores on depression, hysteria, feminity, paranoid, psychasthenia, and schizophrenia. More than 10% of rape offenders showed a personality pathology on hypochondriasis, hysteria, paranoid, and schizophrenia. However, there was no MMPI subscales that distinguished repeaters from first-time offenders. Variable influences on mental health problem were criminal type (rape group), aggression, and self-efficacy. Based upon the study's findings, practical implications of enhancing treatment efficacy to reduce repeat offenses were considered.
