Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the mediating effect of self-esteem between child maltreatment(i.e. child abuse, child neglect) and social withdrawal. Especially, by setting the self-esteem that is considered important in childhood as a mediating variable, this research aims to reveal the effects of the child neglect and abuse on children’s social withdrawal. For the empirical analysis, a structural equation model analysis was performed applying the 7th (2016) data executed for Year 1 elementary school students during the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) published by the National Youth Policy Institute (NYPI). The results showed (1) the direct effect of child abuse on self-esteem but not on social withdrawal, (2) the direct effect of child neglect on self-esteem and social withdrawal (3) indirect effect of child abuse on social withdrawal mediated by self-esteem was statistically significant, (4) indirect effect of child neglect on social withdrawal mediated by self-esteem was statistically significant. Hence, it can be seen that self-esteem is a mediating variables between child neglect and social withdrawal. Through the above research results, implications regarding Korea's child abuse policy was proposed and the proposal for future research direction was additionally discussed.
