Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the reciprocal relationship between school victimization and depression. This study used data from the 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th(hearafter each ‘T1’, ‘T2’, ‘T3’, ‘T4’) survey waves collected form 1,936 adolescents by the Korean Children & Youth Panel Survey 2010 (KCYPS). We utilized a latent growth model(LGM) of depression using school victimization at T1 as a predictor and re-victimization at T4 as an outcome predicted by the LGM of depression. The result of this study are as follows; First, school victimization at T1 was positively associated with overall depression levels and re-victimization at T4. Second, the school victimization at T1 significantly predicted both re-victimization at T4, and baseline, slope of depression. On the other hand, only slope of depression had with longitudinal mediating effect on the re-victimization, which meaning school victimization at T1 had a direct effect on the re-victimization and indirectly predicted through the longitudinal change of depression. On the basis of these findings, political and practical implications to prevent school (re)victimization were discussed.
