Abstract
This study was conducted using mixed research methods to implement an animal-assisted therapy program for educationally vulnerable adolescents who are having difficulty in adjusting to school and to verify its effectiveness. The research participants were 14 educationally vulnerable adolescents who were having difficulty in adjusting to school among the first and second graders of G Middle School in Seoul, and 7 were selected as the experimental group and 7 as the comparison group. The animal-assisted therapy program was conducted with the experimental group from September to December 2023, consisting of twelve 120-minute sessions. To evaluate the program’s effectiveness, pre- and post-tests measuring school adjustment, social skills, withdrawal, and symptoms of depression and anxiety were administered. Quantitative data were analyzed using the nonparametric independent Mann-Whitney U test. Additionally, qualitative data were collected through in-depth interviews with five participants from the program. As a result of the quantitative analysis, the adolescents in the experimental group who participated in the animal-assisted therapy program showed improvements in school adjustment, social skills, withdrawal, and anxiety compared to the comparison group, with statistically significant differences between the pre- and post-test scores. The qualitative analysis identified two main categories and six subcategories, which aligned with the quantitative findings. Additionally, changes such as behavior regulation through self-control, increased empathy through interaction, enhanced self-awareness, and reduced aggression were observed during the program. These results suggest that the animal-assisted therapy program is effective in improving school adjustment and mental health among educationally vulnerable adolescents. Based on the findings, recommendations were made for the expanded implementation of animal-assisted therapy programs for educationally vulnerable adolescents struggling with school maladjustment, as well as for related policy and practice measures.
