이 글은 1907년을 전후한 시기 장응진이 『태극학보』에 발표한 여러 소설과 논설, 특히 「다정다한」과 「과학론」에 나타난 기독교적 세계관에 대한 비전 및 과학을 둘러싼 신뢰 간 길항 관계의 근대적 의미에 대해 분석했다. 문체를 제외하면, 신소설과 확연히 구별되는 스타일로 쓰인 「다정다한」은 광무개혁 이후 구축된 신체제에서 경찰관으로 재직하던 ‘선생’이 시대와의 불화를 거듭한 끝에 투옥된 후 감방에서 기독교로 전향하는 이야기다. 그의 종교적 각성은 광대한 세계의 불가사의한 작동에 희생된 미소한 자기의 존재를 인식한 이후에 이루어진다. 이는 역사적으로 『팡세』의 고도(孤島) 이후, 고립된 장소에서 거대한 우주와의 대립 속에서 내면의 각성에 도달하는 낭만주의적 개인의 전형적인 상에 부합한다. 한편으로 「다정다한」에 나타나는 이와 같은 대립 구도는 장응진이 썼던 「과학론」에서도 유사한 형태로 나타난다. 무한한 우주 앞에서 미소한 자신의 한계를 절감하고 두려움에 떠는 인간의 형상은 역설적으로 오로지 인간 자체의 본유적 능력에 입각하여 세계와 자연의 비의를 해명하고자 하는 지적 체계, 즉 과학과 철학을 요청한다. 장응진의 소설과 논설에서 빈번히 나타나는, 광대한 우주와 세계의 불가사의 앞에서 전율하는 인간의 형상은 이후 한국 근대소설에 나타나는 낭만주의적 개인의 프로토타입으로 출현했다.
Abstract
This study examined the modern meaning of the antagonism between the vision through a world view of Christianity and the faith of a science on ‘Dajungdahan’ and ‘An Essay on a Science’ in Taegukhakbo by Jang Eung Jin. ‘Dajungdahan’ and Sinsoseol works were actually quite distinct in many narrative styles. Especially the fiction had the plot that the protagonist turned from police officer into a Christian in a jail caused by disharmony with a new structure since the Gwangmu reform. His inner awakening based on a being Christian was achived by the realization on an appositon between a secret of the infinite world and a very little individuals selves. Historically these characters was similar to the romanticistic individual by the emergence of confined individual in the lonely island of Pascal’s Pensees. On the other hand, this apposition presented in his ‘An Essay on a Science’ too. It requested a science and a philosophy as modern academic discipline. These characters as very little individuals against the infinite universe in his works was the prototype of a romanticisitic individual of modern Korean fictions afterward.
