Abstract
This paper reviews Corea, the Hermit Nation (1882), one of the most important Korea-related records written by Westerners. William E. Griffis (1843~1928), the author, was interested in Korea when he was a teacher in early Meiji Japan. After he came back to the United States, he began to study Korea and finished the book in October 1882. He wrote it based on scores of books, articles and reports he collected in the East and the West. Especially, he referred to data made in Japan more than anyone, from Japanese history books to writings written or translated by Westerners who had lived in Japan. Since he had never been to Korea, he largely consulted Western records based on experience. His favorite was the introduction of Histoire de l’Église de Corée (1874). It contained a lot of information concerning Korea and its people although it did not describe them positively at all. It was necessary for him to referred to it. Corea, the Hermit Nation, was a compilation of Korean-related records written by foreigners for hundreds of years, by an American deeply fascinated by Meiji Japan. It is not surprising that errors and rumors are found in the book. However, its authority had hardly been weakened even after those who travelled to Korea published more vivid and interesting books. It even affected early-stage scholars of Korean studies. Maurice Courant (1865~1935) consulted it as well as Korean history books when he studied Korean history. Homer B. Hulbert (1863~1949) and James S. Gale (1863~1937) corresponded with him to discuss academic matters. In conclusion, the author argues that it was a bridge between Korea-related records before 1882 and early-stage Korean studies in the late 19th century.
