해롤드 노블(Harold J. Noble, 1903~1953)은 1892년 내한한 북감리교 선교사 부부의 아들로, 한국사를 연구하여 박사 학위를 받고 학계에서 활동한 최초의 미국인 학자이다. 1931년 캘리포니아대학 버클리캠퍼스(이하 ‘UC 버클리’로 줄임)에서 「1895년 전 한국과 한미 관계(Korea and Her Relations with the United States before 1895)」로 학위를 받았고, 졸업 후에는 오리건대학 사학과에 재직하면서 학술 단체 창립과 학술지 발행에도 참여하였다. 학자로 활동한 기간은 그리 길지 않다. 제2차 세계대전에 참전하고 종전 후 몇 년간 한국에서 활동한 데다 50세에 사망하였기 때문이다. 그러나 그가 한국을 다룬 연구 성과를 인정받아 미국 학계에 안착하고 당대의 동아시아 연구자들과 어깨를 나란히 한 첫 번째 인물이었다는 사실을 고려하면, 미국 한국학의 역사에서 그의 역할과 공헌은 결코 사소하지 않다. 본 논문은 노블의 생애와 한국 연구에 관한 시론적 검토이다. 첫 번째 장에서는 그의 출생과 성장, 학업 등을 살펴보고 그가 1925년경 데넷(Tyler Dennett, 1883~1949)의 영향으로 한미관계사 연구자가 되기로 결심하였음을 밝혔다. 두 번째 장에서는 그의 한국 연구 활동을 다루었다. 미국 유학을 떠나기 전 한국에서 이미 연구를 진행한 것, 맥큔(George M. McCune, 1908~1948)보다 10년 먼저 박사 학위를 받은 것, 오리건대학 사학과에서 동아시아사를 담당하며 한국사를 가르친 것, 1941년 극동협회(Far Eastern Association)의 창립과『계간 극동(The Far Eastern Quarterly)』의 발행에 기여한 것 등이다. 마지막 장은 그의 생애 마지막 10여 년에 할애하였다. 1942~1944년 태평양 전쟁 참전과 전후 일본 및 한국에서의 활동을 중심으로 살펴보았다.
Abstract
Harold J. Noble (1903~1953), son of missionaries of the Methodist Episcopal Church who came to Korea in 1892, was the first American scholar who received his Ph. D. in Korean history and worked in academia. In 1931, he submitted his doctoral thesis titled “Korea and Her Relations with the United States before 1895” to University of California. After graduation, he taught as a full-time faculty member of History at the University of Oregon as well as participated in establishing a learned society and publishing its journal. He did not work long as a university historian; he served in World War II, worked in Korea for a few years, and died at the age of fifty. However, he was the first person to settle into American academia by studying Korea and to work with contemintporary East Asian specialists. His role and contribution to the history of Korean studies in the United States are never small. This article is an introductory study of life and work on Korea of Noble. First of all, the author reviews his birth, growth, and education, and finds out that he decided to be a scholar of Korean-American relations around 1925 under the influence of Tyler Dennett (1883~1949). The second chapter covers his work on Korea: he began his study in Korea, not in America; he got his doctorate ten years earlier than George M. McCune (1908~1948); he taught Korean history as East Asian history professor at the University of Oregon; he participated in establishing the Far Eastern Association and in publishing The Far Eastern Quarterly. Finally, the author examines the last decade of his life. He served in the Pacific War, 1942~1944, and worked in Japan and Korea after the war.
