Abstract

This article examines the process of valorization of Kim So-Wol’s poetry in North Korea from 1948-2010. It first examines So-Wol’s poetry as it was consistently presented to the North Korean literati and people. It then examines the additions made to So-Wol’s poetry in accordance with the ideology and policies of the North Korean regime. The North Korean literary establishment has focused on the sentiments of hometown love, patriotism, and loss and mourning for the deprivation of the country and the loss of the nim. However, with the authoritarianization of Kim Il-Sung’s regime, Kim So-Wol’s poetry was rapidly marginalized from ‘progressive realism’ to an instrumental role for ‘subject literature’. As a result, So-Wol’s poetry was adjusted in its role and value as a ‘national literary and artistic heritage’ that was placed under the ‘revolutionary literary and artistic tradition’ centered on Kim Il-Sung’s achievements. This meant that Kim So-Wol’s poetry began to be actively mobilized in the teaching and learning of the ‘autonomy posed by the times and life’ and ‘autonomous human problems’. However, since the 1950s, So-Wol’s poetry has continued to be praised for its outstanding portrayal of national sentiments and life under the folk song tradition and rules. This is why “Chohon(Invocation)”, “Chindalraekkot(Azalea flower)” and dozens of other poems have never lost their status as ‘canon’ that writers and people should read.
