외국인직접투자의 기업생산성 효과분석: 투자유형을 중심으로

초록

본 연구의 목적은 한국의 외국인직접투자를 유형별로 구분하여 기업생산성에 미친 영향을 분석하기 위함이다.본 연구에서는 최근(2009년)의 설문조사 자료를 활용하여 한국에 대한 외국인직접투자를 greenfield형, M&A형, 그리고 지분투자형으로 구분하여 기업성과에 미친 영향을 분석하였다. 대부분의 기존 연구에서는 암묵적으로 greenfield형 투자를 가정하고 FDI의 파급효과를 분석하고 있으나 2000년대 중반이후 전체투자에서 M&A형 투자가 차지하는 비중은 약 50%에 달하고 있다.이에 본 논문에서는greenfield형 투자와 M&A형 투자는 서로 상이한 경제적 효과를 미치게 될 것이라는 전제하에 한국의 외국인직접투자를 투자유형별로 구분하여 기업생산성에 미치는 효과를 분석하였다. 시스템 일반화적률법(System GMM)을 이용한 분석결과에 의하면 투자유형을 고려하지 않을 경우 기존연구와 같이 외국인지분율의 증가는 기업성과에 양(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 분석되었다. 그러나 최근 논란이 되고 있는 greenfield형 투자가 좋은지 아니면 M&A형 투자가 더 나은지를 검증하기 위하여 우리나라 외국인직접투자를 투자유형별로 구분하여 외국인직접투자의 기업생산성 효과 분석을 시도한 결과 우리나라 외국인직접투자의 생산성 효과는 greenfield형, M&A형, 그리고 지분투자형에 따라 다르지 않음을 보여 주었다.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to test the impact of Korean foreign direct investment on firms' productivity. Using recent survey data on Korean foreign direct investment, we investigate the relationship of FDI modes such as greenfield and M&A with firm performance. In doing so, we investigated, on the one hand, to what extent Korean foreign direct investment is consistent with previous literatures, i.e., Does foreign direct investment increase the firms' productivity ? On the other hand,we assess the impact of greenfield FDI on firm performance compared with impact of M&A FDI. Our econometric results suggest that Korean FDI is indeed the positive effect on firm performance.
