본 연구는 대학생의 졸업유예 결정에 실업률로 대표되는 노동시장 조건이 영향을 주는가를 분석하였다. 분석결과 실업률의 상승은 졸업유예율을 통계적으로 유의하게 높이는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 노동시장 조건이 좋지 않을 때 대학생들은 졸업유예를 통하여 졸업시기를 늦추어 노동시장 조건이 개선되기를 기다리고 또한 스펙을 갱신하고자 한다는 것을 시사하였다. 한편, 졸업유예자의 초기 노동시장성과가 졸업을 유예하지 않은 대학생들보다 낮다거나 노동시장에서 불리한 스펙으로 작동한다는 경험적 증거는 없었다. 따라서 졸업유예의 불이익이 존재하지 않는 노동시장상황에서 졸업유예를 통한 노동시장 진입시기 조절은 합리적인 의사결정인 것으로 볼 수 있었다. 마지막으로, 전체실업률 외에 전체고용률과 청년실업률, 청년고용률, 1인당 국내총생산 등을 노동시장을 대리하는 지표로 사용하여 분석한 결과 1인당 국내총생산을 제외하고는 모두 일관된 결과를 얻을 수 있었다.
Abstract
This study analyzes whether the labor market condition represented by unemployment rate make an effect on college students’graduation decisions. The result shows that rise in unemployment rate decreases graduation rate, which indicates that students tend to postpone graduation when labor market condition is bad. There is no empirical evidence that the initial labor market outcomes of late graduates are worse or late graduation works as a signal of low ability, so the control on graduation time is reasonable response. At last, when we use other proxies for labor market condition, all but per capita GDP make consistent results.
