Abstract

A business model based on open source software is a new and unique way of earning income, unlike traditional models that sell proprietary software. Unlike individuals, when an enterprise is involved in an open source software project, one important factor needs to be considered, which is how to secure an economic return on investment. However, the revenue generated through software does not necessarily have to be directly linked to its sales. Companies whose software is the source of revenue are only part of the software industry. It is also clear that even these companies have the advantage of adopting a complementary service business, either to ensure their survival in a recession or to maintain a stable income. For this reason, it is not easy to clearly classify and define open source software products and business models for profit. In this study, we propose a classification system that integrates the classification systems proposed so far, focusing on understanding the classification systems, cases, and perspectives claimed in the existing literature.
