본 논문은 우리경제의 고소득층과 저소득층 간의 소득격차의 확대가 가계소비에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 분석하였다. 소득격차의 지표로써 도시근로자 가계의 소득 5분위배율을 산정하여 가계소비와의 상관관계를 분석한 결과, 소득 5분위배율의 변화는 가계소비에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 외환위기 이후 가계소비의 소득 5분위배율에 대한 탄력성은 -0.2 내외로 추정되었는데, 이는 소득 5분위배율이 10% 상승하면 소비는 2% 정도 감소한다는 것을 의미한다. 본 논문의 분석결과, 고소득층과 저소득층 간의 소득격차가 확대되면 가계소비에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 한계소비성향이 낮은 고소득층과 한계소비성향이 상대적으로 높은 저소득층 간의 소득불평등이 심화될수록 가계 전체의 소비성향이 낮아져 총소비를 위축시킨다는 케인즈 가설을 뒷받침하는 결과라고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
Using Korean household data this paper examines the effect of widening income inequality between the high income and low income households on consumption. The income ratio between the 5th quintile and the 1st quintile income households is constructed as a proxy variable for the income inequality index. The estimation result shows that the income inequality elasticity of household consumption to be around -0.2, which implies that 10% increase in income inequality is associated with a 2% decrease in household consumption. Empirical results indicate that an increase in income inequality would lead to a decrease in household consumption, which is consistent with the Keynesian hypothesis that posits a positive relationship between income equality and aggregate consumption.
