Abstract
Analyzing establishment-level data from U.S. manufacturing between 1977 and 1997, this paper finds that establishments in regions with relatively higher productivity growth rates have increased their productivity faster than establishments in other regions. However, what matters more in explaining regional productivity differences is how efficiently resources have been reallocated among establishments. Regions where resources shifted toward more-productive establishments generally have experienced faster productivity growth. This paper shows that variation in reallocation effects account for about two thirds of differences in labor productivity growth across the nine Census divisions.
