Abstract
This paper investigates the continuous and cumulative effect of temperature on the daily maximum electricity consumption of Korea. After defining the continuous and cumulative effect of temperature using moving average and moving standard deviation of past temperature, nonlinear models such as markov regime switching model, threshold regression and smooth transition model are applied for empirical analysis. The empirical result shows that the continuous and cumulative effect of temperature has a significant impact on daily maximum electricity consumption in Korea. That is, if temperature higher or lower than the threshold persists during a period of time, daily maximum electricity consumption increases. Furthermore, out of sample forecast says that using the continuous and cumulative effect of temperature with temperature, relative humidity and wind velocity can improve the prediction power of daily maximum electricity load. These empirical results imply that the information of past temperature should be positively used in forecasting daily maximum electricity consumption with present climate conditions.
