Abstract
This paper investigates nonlinear relationship between daily maximum electricity consumption and climate factors. This nonlinear relationship is analyzed by nonlinear models such as markov regime switching model, threshold regression model and smooth transition regression model. Empirical analysis results of Korea show that one more asymmetric relationships between daily maximum electricity consumption and such climate factors as temperature, relative humidity, wind velocity, discomfort index and sensible temperature exist in 3 or more regimes. Furthermore, continuous regime having different nonlinear relationship between electricity consumption and climate factors also exists. The threshold temperature deciding relationship between maximum electricity consumption and climate factors is 16 degrees celsius, which is lower than reference temperature for calculating heating degree days or cooling degree days. These empirical results imply that using not only a variety of climate factors but also nonlinear models allowing multi-regime can improve in explaining and predicting daily maximum electricity consumption.
