Abstract

This paper analyses the drama “I Heard it through hearsay”(2015), written by Jung Sungjoo and directed by Ahn Pan-seok, with the concept of “space invaders” by Nirmal Puwar. The “space invaders” by Nirmal Puwar explain the violent changes in the spatial landscape such as conflict, compromise, exclusion and subsumption that occur when outsiders, such as women or social minorities, appear in a space that was excluded. Seo Bom, who appeared at the home of the head of the nation’s largest law firm as a body of underage pregnant woman, is a kind of space invader who disturbs the family’s thoroughly hierarchical space and shakes the ruling order and norms. This space is both a private space and a public space, where owners and employees form a separate vertical hierarchy. With the intrusion of Bom, the vertical dynamic of the spatial hierarchy works more actively, appearing in the form of separation control and division rule. The kinetics of inclusion and exclusion occurring between Bom and In-sang(/ their baby/Bom’ family/other employees) continue to make distinction and stratifications as circumstances change. It seeks to solidify the governance system, especially in the form of physical norms such as manners and attitudes. The resistance of Bom and In-sang gradually expands into the fight against Hansong by the employees, with generations, classes and genders intersecting each other, building a counter-front. The resistance of the people against the tyranny and oppression of the ruler gains strength through the incessant back-chattering of the employees, the politics of gossip. Eventually, the revolt of the subordinates, which began with the emergence of a space invader, Seo Bom, gradually cemented solidarity and bond through the space of gossip, and finally creates huge ruptures in the strong ruling order and the system.
