Abstract
The speech training so far without in-depth considering about the type of debate just brought a specific type in and introduced it. The training which introduces the procedures and formats of specific types of debate and offers step-by-step strategies without regard to student’s needs and levels has limitations in fully implementing the features and advantages of each type of the debate. In this study, based on awareness of these issues, were examined the variables of determination required to select the optimal type of debate that meets the educational functions at which the debate class or competitions aimed. First of all, after making sure of the educational functions of debate through existing researches I observed the characteristics of representative types of debate. I set ‘nature of propositions’ and ‘the balance of the burden of proof’ as the variables related to the thinking ability, ‘speech style’, ‘the presentation way of proposition’, ‘the speech rate of debate’ as the communication-related variables, and ‘the way of cross examination’ and ‘the number of participants’ as the interaction variables. And then I discussed with others in detail how the types of debate differ for each variable. In the case of policy debate where even the possibility of realization of solution is discussed, based on a thorough study of materials and research results, it is appeared to be suitable for college students rather than primary and secondary school students in terms of research process, debate way and the speech rate, because the college students must bring up the specialized competence in the area of research and career. In addition, it appeared that if a deep philosophical reason is focused, Lincoln-Douglas debate would be good for the use, while the public speaking skills is focused, parliamentary debate or public forum debate had to be suitable. In particular, it has been identified that the public forum debate where the persuasive ability to deliver an issue to the general public may be a new alternative for a primary and secondary public education in speech.
