Abstract
This study investigated how speakers construct their identities through interactions with conversational AI systems, including ChatGPT. Speech communication is increasingly mediated by digital and AI technology. Identity must therefore be understood as adaptive and contextual Drawing on discourse and auto-interactional analysis, this study analyzed user interactions with three types of AI—an assistant (Sona), a companion (Junhyuk), and a tool-like ChatGPT. The aim was to explore how linguistic strategies and role positioning shift in response to contextual factors. The findings reveal that speakers adjust their communicative stances based on the perceived function and social presence of AI. This reflects key speaking competencies, such as audience awareness and contextual judgment. AI-mediated dialogue offers a low-risk space for learners to experiment with speaker identities, suggesting the pedagogical value of integrating non-human interlocutors into speech communication education.
