Abstract
This paper aims to elucidate the inherent ambivalence of Byeok (癖). Our study begins by addressing the limitation in existing research, which has primarily confined its understanding of Byeok to a purely intrinsic and purposive act, thus insufficiently exploring its social and philosophical implications. Byeok, a unique cultural phenomenon within the intellectual circles of the late Joseon Dynasty, refers to a pathological immersion and obsession with specific objects or activities, predominantly interpreted in previous studies as an autotelic pursuit. However, this research employs Bourdieu’s theory of Distinction as an analytical framework to investigate the capitalistic dimensions underlying Byeok as a tool for social competition. We will demonstrate that Byeok encompasses not only intentional strategies for differentiation but also a complex dynamic where even ostensibly purposive acts of Byeok inadvertently generate distinction through the cultural capital accrued during processes of pure immersion. Furthermore, this study explores the possibility that Byeok may constitute a unique form of capital, extending beyond economic capital to encompass the various forms of social capital discussed by Bourdieu, including cultural, social, and symbolic capital. Consequently, this research suggests that a thorough understanding of Byeok’s multifaceted nature and complex meanings requires an approach rooted in the perspective of distinction, rather than a mere focus on purposive action. This paper analyzes the ambivalence of Byeok and argues that this micro-level individual inclination contributes to explaining the macro-level social dynamics of distinction within late Joseon intellectual society. Moreover, this study seeks to offer a novel philosophical perspective on Byeok, thereby laying the groundwork for future in-depth philosophical inquiry into its intrinsic value and significance.
