Abstract
Ssitgim Gut is a ceremony to send away a dead person to the world beyond. Ssitgim Gut shows slight changes in different regions and it can be said that there is the coexistence of universality and local specialty of Ssitgim Gut. This article aims to examine the musical universality and characteristics of Ssitgim Gut centering on musical pieces and rhythms used in Ssitgim Gut. Especially, through the comparison of musical processes that manifest the same Gutgeori, the local similarities and differences will be disclosed. The Ssitgim Gut materials compared in this article are from Lee Jang Dan, Yu Jum Ja, Park Gyung Ja, Chae Jung Rye, and Ahn Ae Im. The follow is the result of the research. The composition of each Gutgeori can be divided into three parts, namely, basic shaman's song, shaman's song with Seongjupuri, basic shaman's song with Cheongeunsori. The basic shaman's song usually uses Dongsalpuri, Eotmori, or rhythms with irregular beat. Seongjupuri and Cheongeunsori are the final pieces that culminate Gutgeori: Seongjupuri which is also used as the accompaniment for dancing is used at the beginning of Gut and Cheongeunsori with a dash of sadness is used at the end of Gutgeori which is related to a dead person. Rhythms used in basic shaman's song are shown to be slightly different for each shaman and this is related to Oejanggu and Oejinggeori. The common pieces, Seongjupuri and Cheongeunsori are used by some shamans and not by others. In case of Seongjupuri, Park Gyung Ja shows wholly different usage of the piece in comparison with other shamans. The use of Cheongeunsori shows huge difference for each shaman. There are various Gutgeori in which Cheongeunsori is sang and the number of performance is multifarious. Additional musical pieces also show some differences in their characteristics and types. First of all, Lee Jang Dan and Park Gyung Ja borrow the folklore Sangyeosori (a song people sing as they carry out the coffin to the burial ground) but other shamans do not sing it. Also, musical pieces such as MyeongJul bokJul danggigi, Sajayeougi from Neokolrigi, and Baegeotgi from Gildakeum are not the common pieces but they are sang often.
