Abstract

This thesis dealt with the 'Seo(序; preface)' and 'Bal(跋; postscript)' of the elementary textbooks on the Chinese classics. The 'Seo(序)' and 'Bal(跋)' of the elementary textbooks on the Chinese classics shows somewhat unique aspects because of the character of the textbook itself. Originally, the contents of the 'Seo(序)' is the author's story of living and praise for the supremacy of the author's sentence. But 'Seo(序)' of the textbook was written before the death of the author. In this case, there is no contents on the praise for the book. Some cases report that no 'Seo(序)' is found. When old textbook is newly published, sometimes 'the Preface made by the King' is placed on the first page of the book in order to admire the contents of the book or fill the words of recommendation. This time the subject of the 'Seo(序)' is not the new textbook. It must also be noted that many Korean translation of Chinese classics(諺解) were circulated in the society of traditional Korea. When investigated, this Korean translations of Chinese classics have only 'Bal(跋; postscript)‘ and not 'Seo(序; preface)' in almost cases. No case is reported that both 'Seo(序; preface)' and 'Bal(跋; postscript)' are simultaneously found. And the substances of 'Bal(跋; postscript)‘ has no important difference from that of the 'Seo(序; preface). The books which have only 'Bal(跋; postscript)' and not 'Seo(序; preface)' lack in the originality or importance. Of course, some 'Bal(跋; postscript)' display the creative originality or substantial assertion according to the capability of the writers.
