Abstract

T. E. Hulme is concerned with two contrary conceptions of man, the Religious and the Humanist. Hulme’s “Religious attitude” toward man is the conviction that human nature is essentially bad, fixed and limited because of Original Sin. Hulme’s idea of man’s inevitable limitation requires discipline, morality, and belief in God for human development. T. S. Eliot, who was influenced by Hulme in the formulation of moral and “Religious attitude” toward man’s nature, also champions order, tradition and authority to discipline man. Therefore, Eliot tries to explore the tragic stages of growth of imperfect man throughout life based on Hulme’s pessimistic conception of man in “Animula.” In this respect, assuming as a moral guide, Eliot emphasizes the necessity for moral restraint for a good upbringing as well as for recourse to prayer for spiritual regeneration aided by God’s grace in “Animula.”
