Abstract
The Jeju local legend The Magistrate Who Killed the Snake God and the Snake's Revenge embodies both the worship of a snake deity and narratives of resistance against such practices. The legend comprises ten episodes, which may be broadly categorized into two primary narrative groups: one centered on Seo Ryeon and the legend of Gimnyeong Cave, and the other on Yi Hyeong-sang and the Gwangjeongdang narrative. Additional peripheral narratives sharing similar motifs, along with a foundational version that references Yi Hyeong-sang, further contribute to the legend’s narrative structure. This legend reflects the underlying belief system of the local community, which was originally established through gift-based exchange relationships and subsequently dismantled by the intervention of external authority. Accordingly, the legend reveals a dynamic process through which community ethics and collective memory are reconstructed, thereby elucidating its contemporary significance in the context of social transmission.
