Abstract

This study critically examines the longstanding marginalization of Korean vernacular long family novels in secondary education and explores their educational potential in light of their recent inclusion in the College Scholastic Ability Test and EBS materials. It notes that conventional instruction has focused narrowly on family prosperity and Confucian patriarchy, overlooking the genre’s diversity and deeper meanings. Arguing that these novels are closely tied to women’s lives and consciousness, the study positions them as significant material for feminist literary education. Focusing on Sohyeonseongrok, an early work of the genre, it analyzes the portrayal of Hwa Su-eun, who vividly embodies women’s realities and emotions, and So Un-seong, whose public heroism contrasts with his domestic violence and personal flaws. The findings reveal that such novels possess complex narratives beyond didactic moralism, offering opportunities to expand historical awareness, women’s perspectives, and human understanding in literary education
