Abstract

This study analyzes the meaning of fortune and virtue that Koreans seek through a myeongdang (auspicious grave yard) by examining the Myeongdangbalbokdam (Tales of Gaining Fortune through Auspicious grave yard) from Dongyahwijip(동야휘집). Dongyahwijip is a representative collection of folk tales compiled by Lee Won-myeong in the 19th century. The 11 stories of Myeongdangbalbokdam(명당발복담) included in this collection provide detailed descriptions of extra-ordinary geomancy, auspicious grave yards, and the characteristics of the narrative subjects who acquire these sites. The author, based on existing literary tales and folk narratives, presents a clear narrative goal: the pursuit of happiness for the protagonist and their descendants, which is difficult to achieve in reality, through the acquisition of a myeongdang. This goal is accomplished through an encounter with geomancy, These geomantic stories demonstrate the belief that, while fortune is dependent on the will of heaven and is destined, humans can shape their fate through their own efforts. Human effort is seen as the virtue that generates fortune, and the acquisition of fortune through auspicious grave yard is viewed as the result of this effort. In these stories of auspicious graveyards and fortunes, the best geomancers were individuals who had a deep understanding of the principles of earth, astronomy, and the cycles of good and bad fortune. They were the mediators who identified the auspicious sites blessed by heaven and connected them to individuals worthy of inheriting such blessings. The geomancers appearing in Dongyahwiji were real historical figures from the Joseon Dynasty, ranging from officially recorded diviners with their names in official records to nameless monks, servants, and legendary figures spoken of in folk tales. The practical actions of fortune-seeking entities in valuing and caring for life encompassed not only people, regardless of wealth or status, but also animals. Their good deeds were sometimes powerful enough to complement imperfect auspicious sites designated by feng shui, ultimately ensuring the fulfillment of true fortune. The fortune gained through feng shui, as taught by Master Yi In, was not a predetermined fate but rather the result of a lifetime of effort by the fortune-seeking entity to achieve happiness for themselves and their descendant The pursuit of happiness depicted in the stories was far from the individualistic notion of happiness. It was based on a family-centered and lineage-centered concept of happiness. The belief was that one's actions in the present were an investment for future generations, and the greatest form of happiness was seeing descendants succeed—such as passing the civil service exams and attaining high government positions—thereby ensuring the prosperity of the family or clan.
