유구(琉球) 시인 채대정(蔡大鼎)의 연행시(燕行詩) 고찰

이 글에서 필자는 유구 시인 채대정(蔡大鼎)의 연행(燕行) 한시를 고찰했다. 채대정의 생애, 세 차례에 걸친 중국 사행의 여정(旅程), 1872년 사행의 소산인 《북연유초(北燕游草)》에 수록된 작품의 특성을 정리했다. 《북연유초》에 수록된 연행 한시 작품은 여정을 촘촘하게 반영하면서, 채대정 개인의 경험에 초점을 맞춘 특징이 있다는 것을 알게 되었다. 채대정은 사행단 일행과 함께한 사연, 중국과 중국인을 관찰한 내용, 당시 사행의 독자적인 면모를 작품에 형상화하는 데는 적극적이지 않았다. 채대정은 당시 사행이 무척 괴롭고 마음속에서 근심이 떠나지 않는다고 되풀이해서 말하고 있다. 그런데 괴로움과 근심의 원인이 날씨나 여행자가 느끼는 객수(客愁) 때문이라고 말한다. 하지만 그것은 표면에 내세운 이유이고, 동아시아 한문 문명권이 해체되는 격변에 처한 유구(琉球)의 장래에 대한 불안감에서 말미암는 것이라고 이해해야 한다. 동아시아 책봉조공(冊封朝貢) 체제가 해체되는 시기에 유구의 시인이 느낀 깊은 수심(水深)의 형상화 – 이것이 《북연유초》가 가지는 동아시아 문학사에서의 위상이라고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
In this paper, the author examines the travel poems of the Ryukyu poet Chae Dae-jeong(蔡大鼎, Sai Taite). The study outlines his life, the three diplomatic missions he undertook to China, and the characteristics of the works featured in Buk Yeon Yu Cho(北燕游草), a collection from his 1872 mission. The travel poems in Buk Yeon Yu Cho closely reflect the journey while focusing on Chae Dae-jeong's personal experiences. He does not actively portray the experiences of the travel group, observations of China and its people, or the unique aspects of the diplomatic mission in his works. Chae Dae-jeong repeatedly states that the journey was extremely painful and that constant worry weighed heavily on his mind. He attributes the source of his suffering and anxiety to the weather and the traveler's sense of melancholy. However, these reasons are superficial. The underlying cause lies in his anxiety about the uncertain future of Okinawa, which was undergoing upheaval due to the collapse of the East Asian tributary system. The deep sorrow Chae Dae-jeong felt about the future of Ryukyu during this period of crisis in East Asian civilization is what gives Buk Yeon Yu Cho its significant place in the history of East Asian literature.
