대학 신입생의 특성과 취학권 : 전남대학을 사례로

최근 대학 진학자의 감소로 고등교육 수요가 격감함에 따라 지방대학을 중심으로 신입생 미충원 문제가 발생하고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 문제점이 어느 지역보다 심각하게 대두하고 있는 광주전남지역의 전남대학을 사례로 대학 입학생의 사회경제적 특성과 진학배경 그리고 취학권의 공간적 특성 등을 분석하고자 했다. 본 연구는 대학교육체제의 확충에 따른 대학진학 기회가 확대되고 있는 상황에서 고교 졸업생의 전남대학 진학패턴이 과거와 적잖은 차별성을 보여 줄 것이라는 전제 위에서 출발하였다. 연구 결과를 보면, 전남대학 신입생의 사회경제적 계층은 주로 중산층에 속하고 부모의 학력 수준도 고졸 이상이 다수를 차지하는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 신입생의 취학권에 있어서는 중소도시 및 농어촌 지역 출신자가 크게 줄어들고 대학 소재지인 광주 출신이 주류를 이루는 것으로 나타났으며, 따라서 과거와 달리 근거리 진학행태가 뚜렷하게 강화되고 있음을 알 수 있었다.
Abstract
Many regional universities in Korea are facing the growing shortages of university candidates through the absolute decline of high school graduates. It also related the expansion of higher education since the middle of the 1990's. This paper attempts to analyze the socioeconomic characteristics and the important motives or backgrounds of university entrance behavior of matriculates and to examine its spatial attraction by the case study of Chonnam national university in Gwangju. This study is based on the premise that under the today's worrying situation of over-education the entrance behaviour of university candidates is very different from the past. The results show that socioeconomic status of Chonnam national university matriculates belongs to middle class and its parent's educational level can be evaluated to the graduation of high school and university. Especially the university matriculates from small cities and rural areas surrounding the city Gwangju have rapidly declined during the last 20 years. Therefore the spatial attraction of Chonnam national university has become smaller than before and limited to the university-located Kwangju metropolitan area. Thus the entrance behavior of matriculates exhibits a tendency of short distance migration.
