This paper proposes a new strategy differing from those of the Chinese and Japanese by investigating the significance and identity of Korean fashion design. The results are as follows: 1. The identity of Korean fashion design should be determined based on patterns and methods quite different from the paradigm for conventional Korean traditional costumes. 2. Apart from common western philosophy and culture, Korean philosophy and emotions should be expressed by materials from Korean history and tradition. 3. Based on the harmonization of tradition and modernism, 'Korean' fashion design should be continuously developed to make it a global brand. In the new millennium, fashion design brings global competitiveness as a high value-added industry based on global commonality and national identity. In order for Korean fashion design to remain competitive in the international market, more studies that deal with national history and culture as well as visual arts need to be conducted.
