Abstract

This paper aims to summarize the achievements of the Sungkyun Institute of China Studies (SICS), one of Korea’s leading research institutes on China, and to discuss key issues regarding the direction of China studies in Korea in the coming years, including those of SICS. While Korea’s China Studies does possess a long history, it is also true the field also experienced a clear rupture due to the upheavals of the 20th century and the Cold War. Rising from the rubble such discontinuity, modern China Studies began to take root again following Korea’s diplomatic normalization with China in the early 1990s, with their outcomes becoming concretely visible around 2010. Among the prominent university-based research institutes that have grown on this new foundation of China studies, SICS stands out. Thus, assessing SICS’s achievements across various dimensions serves as an attempt to gauge the current state of Korea’s China studies in the post-normalization era. The strengths and weaknesses, as well as the accomplishments and limitations of SICS may provide insight into critical facets of the broader challenges and opportunities Korea’s China studies are facing today. Building on this analysis, this paper seeks to offer concrete suggestions for the future trajectory of social science-based China studies in Korea. The discussion particularly focuses on how Korea’s social science-oriented China studies—including those conducted at SICS—should approach the issue of integrating humanities to substantially enhance literacy and analytical capabilities regarding Chinese society and discourse. Furthermore, based on this discussion, the paper proposes the introduction of a critical conceptual framework—the “thickness” of Chinese social discourse—and calls for greater attention to the unique structure in which so-called mainstream and non-mainstream discourses interact within China’s political and social discourse.
