초록
The purpose of this study is to understand Mangsu-ui, an item of the martial arts uniform. Documentary records and a relic are used as research material to uncover the changes in the Mangsu-ui throughout its history. A single document and a single relic are used in preceding research. Therefore, the archives of a military camp from later Joseon are analyzed to overcome the lack of research material. There are descriptions of a foot soldier having put on Gamtu or Jeongeon, Mangsu-ui, fabric belt, pants and Beoseon regarding 18 types of martial arts in the 『Muyedobotongji(武藝圖譜通志)』. The hat and the top differed according to the type of infantry. There is a collection in the National Museum of Korea which is mostly similar to the record except for some details. Research analysis of the archives of Muwiso(or Muwiyeong) is as follows; First, the name of Mangsu-ui in Jeongjo period has been changed to MokmanguiㆍMangryonguiㆍYongmangui in Gojong period. Regardless of the wearer, a costume decorated with dragons was called Mangui or Mangryongui. In royal documents, ManguiㆍMangryonguiㆍMangpo are official clothes for the King and the Prince. In military records, ManguiㆍMangryongui were the uniform of the foot soldiers. Second, an expensive silk Mangryongui and a cheap cotton Mangui coexisted in the Gojong period. The reason why the two kinds of Mangui coexisted is because of the classification of position or purpose. Third, the manufacturing methods of each item, MokmanguiㆍMangryonguiㆍWaemalㆍDujeongeonㆍJeondae, were studied because the accompanying costumes were similar, regardless of the period. Forth, Mangui wasn’t worn by all military. Mangui is found only in articles related with Salsu unit. 『Muyedobotongji』 is also a book on martial arts of Salsu. For this reason, Mangui was a costume limited to Salsu among the infantry. The concept, history, and making methods of Mangui, a martial arts uniform in the Joseon Dynasty, are investigated in this study.
