Abstract
The purpose of this study is to develop and present maternity wear designs incorporating textile patterns derived from the auspicious symbols of Princess Bokon’s Hwarot, which is a ceremonial robe, as a means of alleviating the psychological and emotional stress experienced by pregnant women during pregnancy and childbirth. To achieve this, the study first reviewed the concept and design considerations of maternity wear, formative characteristics and symbolic meaning of the patterns of Princess Bokon’s Hwarot wear through literature and prior research. Second, 8 textile patterns previously developed in earlier research were modified and supplemented so that they can be applied to maternity wear design based on the 2025 fashion color trend and color series preferred by pregnant women. Based on the analysis of one-piece dress types from 5 online shopping malls specializing in maternity wear, 2025 SS fashion trends, and the results of prior research, four maternity wear designs were developed. A total of 32 variations were created by combining the revised 8 textile patterns with the 4 maternity wear designs using a 3D virtual fitting program, and the suitability of the design, satisfaction, psychological changes regarding patterns and colors, and purchase intentions were investigated. For this, one-on-one in-depth interviews were conducted with pregnant women. The tools used for developing the textile patterns, maternity wear designs, and 3D simulations included Adobe Creative Cloud and CLO 3D. In conclusion, by incorporating textile patterns based on motifs from Princess Bokon’s Hwarot into maternity wear design, this study suggests a potential effect in helping to relieve psychological and emotional stress for pregnant women.
