Abstract
The popular arts are part and parcel in the young generation's daily life. Moreover, it happens that the cultural status of them in relatively recent times has risen so much that they have frequently been involved as a natural course of study in school. However, the older generation is still suspicious of them, especially in two aspects. The one is their commercial aspect with regard to its negative influences on the younger generation's value-judgement and world-view. The other is their aesthetic aspect with regard to its negative influences on the younger generation's artistic imagination and sensibilities. But the real problem begins when the older generation tries to communicate with the younger generation on that matter. For as soon as the suspicious attitude of the older generation assumes a sort of pedagogical strain, the younger generation shrinks from having conversation with the older generation and its authoritative condescension. This paper is an attempt to have a pedagogically significant conversation with the younger generation on the popular arts with due consideration of its fascination with them. This paper includes following questions. 1) What is the popular arts? 2) Are the popular arts art? 3) How popular are the popular arts? 4) Is there any positive function of the popular arts as an entertainment? These questions are dealt with particularly in close connection with music, literature and film, but they can be applicable to cartoon, animation, TV drama or computer game as well. This paper adopts a form of imaginary dialogue between a teacher and a university-level-student with keen interest in the cultural matters. So any teacher in junior or senior high school who is planning on his or her own conversation with pupils has better properly modify this paper in his or her own way. This paper will do just as a reference and stimulation.
