이 글은 한 인디 기타리스트의 생애사를 통해 인디 음악인에게 인디 음악이 지니는 의미와 현실적인 생계 문제에도 불구하고 비주류 음악을 계속 할 수 있도록 만드는 힘에 대하여 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 기존 한국 인디음악을 바라보는 시각은 주류 음악 혹은 주류 음악을 제작하는 자본과 시스템을 거부하는 대안적 의미가 대부분이었다. 그러나 실재 참여 관찰과 생애사를 통해 밝혀진 인디 음악의 의미는 비슷한 취향을 공유한 사람들 사이에서 만들어진 일종의 공동체라는 것이다. 이기열(가명)은 소비자로서 취향이 생성되고 전문화 된 이후 취향을 경제수단으로 삼았다. 취향이 만들어지던 시기에 지방에서 살고 있던 기열은 중앙(서울)에 비해 다양성을 누 리지 못했으며, 이에 한계를 느끼고 서울로 올라왔다. 전업 기타리스트가 되었지만, 일반적인 서울 출신 음악인들과 다른 경로를 거쳐야 했다. 이러한 과정에서 그는 자신과 취향을 공유하는 공동체의 일원으로 받아들여졌다. 그의 음악적 취향은 자신이 만들고 찾게 된 음악 동료들과 영향을 주고받으면서 좀 더 공고해진다. 그가 만드는 음악의 소비자는 자신과 같은 취향을 지닌 사람들로 구성된 공동체이며, 이들의 반응은 다시 이기열의 음악에 흡수된다. 취향의 공동체는 이기열의 삶을 비춰볼 수 있는 정체성의 준거집단인 것이다.
Abstract
This study set out to investigate the meaning of independent music to independent musicians and their driving force to continue the non-mainstream music despite the troubled living with a focus on a life history of an indie guitarist. The most prevelent perceptionof independent music in Korea is that it's an alternative music refusing the capital the system as well as the nature of the mainstream music itself. The results of participant observation and life history demonstrated that independent music was rather a community built by those who shared similar tastes. Lee, Gi Yeol(pseudonym)`s music turns into the economic means only after his taste as a consumer was refined and gained expertise. Living in a snall town during the period when his taste was formed, he couldn't enjoy the diversity of taste in Seoul. He finally went to Seoul, chose to live his life as a guitarist, and was forced to go through different routines from the musicians in Seoul. Completing the process successfully, he was finally accepted as a member of the community that shared his musical taste. His musical taste became more sofisticated, while exchanging influences with his colleagues. The consumers of his music were also the members of the community, and they share similar musical taste. Their reactions shapes his musical production. Thus taste and community were the most significant reference for his identity with which he leads his life.
