Abstract

This study examines the regional identity and practical aspects of traditional wedding costume culture in Gangneung by focusing on the composition and symbolism of the otdanji—a chest containing clothing prepared by brides prior to marriage—and related to the trousseau. The research methods included oral interviews with residents and former residents of the Gangneung region, analysis of physical materials such as otdanji and wedding garments, and a comparative review of trousseau lists from other regions. The findings are as follows. First, due to geographical characteristics that limited interactions with the central regions, Gangneung developed a distinctive wedding culture. Limited access to supplies influenced the composition of wedding attire, such as dallyeong and wonsam, resulting in practical, frugal forms that reflect local lifestyles. A community-oriented way of life is also evident in these practices. Second, the otdanji served as a key element of the trousseau, containing primarily clothing items that the bride had prepared from a young age and brought to her marital home. It symbolized the bride's sewing skills and diligence and held cultural significance by reflecting the local community's lifestyle and values. Third, after the Japanese colonial period, the symbolic and cultural value of the otdanji gradually declined as it was replaced by bandaji (bedding chests), ham (wedding chests), and other containers. Nevertheless, the otdanji remains an important cultural heritage item that demonstrates Gangneung's distinctive wedding costume culture. This study contributes to understanding Gangneung's traditional wedding costume culture and its community-centered way of life through the lens of the otdanji. It offers implications for the preservation, transmission, and modern reinterpretation of traditional culture.
