Abstract
As construction firms meet the complex needs of globalization by extending construction projects to overseas markets, the need for management training geared to the specific requirements of these international projects has become evident. However, there are few studies focusing on pre-departure training and organizational support for such projects. Specifically, the success of an overseas construction project may be determined by the adjustment of expatriate managers and the opportunity for career development. This study aims to tackle this topic by examining the adjustment and individual career commitment of expatriate construction managers on overseas projects. Specifically, the influence of pre-departure training and organizational support on overseas adjustment and career commitment is examined. Result shows as follows are: First, organizational support significantly related to expatriate's career commitment. Second, expatriate training also significantly related to expatriate's career commitment. Third, career commitment is not effect between organizational support, expatriate training and expatriate adjustment. For this study, 112 surveys were administered to repatriated managers of 3 of Korea's major construction firms. Survey results were analyzed using SPSS 15.0. Results suggest a more substantial influence of both pre-departure training and organizational support on career commitment over adjustment to the foreign work environment. These results have important implications for future research on pre-departure training & organizational support in Korean firms.
