Abstract

This study attempted to explore the types of corporate managers’ subjective perception on workplace bullying and analyze the characteristics of the types. To this end, the Q methodology was used, and the final 47 Q statements were extracted through in-depth interviews and literature surveys, and 41 managers were selected as P samples for Q classification. As a result of the study, four types of perception on workplace bullying perceived by managers were derived. The first type was ‘constructive criticism-conscious type’, which focused on the protection and active response to the employees affected by bullying in the workplace. The second type was ‘objective fact-checking type’, which tended to quickly investigate bullying cases in the workplace or seek advice from a senior manager or dedicated department. The third type was ‘passive problem- laissez-faire type’, which tended to passively allow unfair work orders from superiors or bullying problems from victims. The fourth type was ‘friendly emotion-aware type’, which preferred individual interviews about the bullying grievances of members in the workplace, and did not want either the resignation of the victim employee or the disciplinary action of the perpetrator employee. This study categorized corporate managers' subjective perceptions of workplace bullying, and these outcomes are expected to provide basic information on manager education and program development on workplace bullying.
