Abstract
This study explores the conceptual nature and therapeutic function of surplus reality, a core construct in psychodrama, and examines the structural processes through which surplus reality—mediated by spontaneity and creativity—facilitates psychological integration. To this end, both literature review and case study methods were employed, grounded in the assumption that the operation of surplus reality emerges within the dynamics of an individual's inner experience and interpersonal interaction in the group. The research materials were derived from transcripts, observation notes, and participant statements collected from a six-session psychodrama group conducted in a psychiatric ward of a metropolitan hospital from March to April 2020, focusing on the case of the protagonist “Nabi” (pseudonym). The analysis revealed that surplus reality functions as a psychological realm in which previously unexpressed emotions, needs, and relational dynamics are symbolically enacted, thereby creatively liberating repressed experiences and promoting the integration of affective, bodily, relational, and meaning-making processes. In particular, the experiential cycle of DO→UNDO→REDO→SHARING operated as a creative therapeutic mechanism that facilitated experiential reorganization, re-meaning making, and ultimately linguistic and narrative integration. By reinterpreting surplus reality not as a mere technique but as a field of psychological possible worlds, this study articulates the structural framework of psychodrama’s healing process and suggests implications for theoretical expansion and practical application in clinical psychology, mental health, and the creative arts therapies.
