대학은 교육과 연구를 통해 우리사회의 지속가능성에 크게 영향을 미치는 조직이며, 지속가능한 사회를 위해 중요한 역할을 할 것으로 기대된다. 해외의 많은 대학들은1990년대부터 지속가능한 발전을 위한 대학의 책임을 인식하고 이의 실천을 위한 선언에 동참하고 있다. 그러나 대학의 지속가능경영에 관한 연구는 거의 이루어지지 않았다. 본 연구는 대학 지속가능경영에 관한 이론적 연구의 기반을 마련하기 위한 탐색적 연구로, 지속가능경영을 실천하는 해외 대학들을 대상으로 사례조사를 실시하였다. 본격적조사에 앞서 지속가능경영에 관한 국제적 원칙들과 대학 지속가능경영에 관한 규범적논의들을 검토하였다. 이어 미국, 영국, 일본의 주요 대학들의 사례 연구를 통해 대학 지속가능경영의 주요 요소와 이슈들을 파악하였다. 또한 지속가능경영을 실천하고자 하는대학들에게 고려해야 할 실무적 시사점을 제공하였다. 마지막으로 연구의 한계를 지적하고 향후 연구 방향을 논의하였다.
Abstract
University has significant effects on the sustainability of our society through its education and research activities. It is expected that university should play an important role of building sustainable society. Many overseas universities have understood their responsibilities for sustainable development and implement sustainable practices. However, research on sustainable management was difficult to find. Current research is an exploratory research laying the basis for theoretical research on university sustainability. We revised international principles of sustainability and normative discourse on the university sustainability. We also studied some cases of US, UK and Japan universities and found important factors and issues in university sustainability. Our finding provides the managerial implications with university managers. Finally, some limitations of current research and directions for future research were discussed.
