Abstract
The rise of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) activity has started to affect strategic management, particularly with the growing concern regarding sustainability in the face of environmental change. In past studies, one of the most widespread topics in ESG has been the relationship between ESG and financial performance, with mixed results having been reported. While most research has identified a positive relationship between ESG and firm performance, some studies suggest that they can have a negative relationship. The purpose of this paper is to analyze prior studies and develop strategic suggestions for future research on this relationship focused on the managerial motivation of family firms based on the socioemotional wealth perspective. We conclude with detailed directions for future research that can offer a more refined analysis of this subject.
