As is the case with many other notions, notions like temporality and causality can be expressed explicitly by lexical items or communicated implicitly. In this paper, I look at how these notions interact with grammatical aspects of the utterance with special reference to the Korean suffix -ese. At the same time, I argue that for the plausible explanation of the linguistic phenomena of the suffix -ese, we need to consider the grammatical factors which have bearings on the interpretation of the utterances containing the suffix -ese. Conversely, it is also shown that pragmatic knowledge affects certain grammatical behaviors of -ese constructions. (Konkuk University)
