This paper shows how the theory of Optimality can account for various diachronic changes of the off-glide diphthongs in Korean. First of all, we argue that the major diphthongal changes in Korean vowel system have been based on the strong trend avoiding off-glides. Then, we show that the gradual disappearance of the off-glides in Middle Korean and Early Modern Korean can be accounted for in terms of constraint interaction. Moreover, we employ the notion of “positional faithfulness”(Beckman 1997) for the various surface realization of the (presumably) only off-glide /ɨy/ in Modern Korean. Here it is also shown that a different constraint ranking reflects the dialectal(i.e., Gyeongsang and Jeolla) difference. Finally, we show that the notion of “lexical conservatism”(Steriade 1997) is crucial for a successful account of the [e] realization of the particle /ɨy/. (Kyung Hee University & Hanyang University)
