Abstract
It is assumed in this paper that Korean tones are domain-dependent. They depend on two domains: tonal domains and phonological phrases. Tonal domains are defined in terms of tonal boundaries that are specified in the lexicon. The typical tone patterns of Korean dialects are decided by the domain-dependent constraints. It is argued in this paper that the variations observed in Korean tone dialects are all explained by constraint reranking. It is observed that inter- and intra-dialectal variations are different in constraint reranking. Inter-dialectal variation results from the different dominance relation between two conflicting constraints that are sensitive to tonal domains. By contrast, intra-dialectal variation found in some dialects results from the reversal of two constraint groups: the constraint group defined in terms of tonal domains and the one defined in terms of phonological phrases.
