Abstract
Wee, Hae-Kyung. 2006. Definiteness of Wh-phrases Extractable from Weak Islands, Korean Journal of Linguistics, 31-3, 367-393. This study explores wh-questions that are insensitive to weak islands (WI), e.g., wh-island and negative island. In this study, it is claimed that there are semantically two different types of wh-questions; one is definite and the other is indefinite, and WI insensitive wh-phrases are instances of definite wh-phrases, whereas indefinite wh-phrases cannot occur in the same context. It is shown that definiteness is captured by whether or not the wh-question carries an existential presupposition and by an unusual type of prosodic pattern. The reason why only definite wh-phrases can occur in weak island construction is explained by the proposal that definite wh-phrases are base-generated in COMP and hence can occur regardless of presence of an island, whereas indefinite wh-phrases cannot, having to undergo a movement.
