Abstract

Lee, Sang-Geun. 2007. On the Telicity of Verbal Noun Objects in Korean. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 32-3, 517-536. It has been known that the aspectual properties of the verb phrase or the clause are different from whatever aspectual properties the verb starts with (Vendler 1967, Verkuyl 1993, Tenny 1987, 1994, Pustejovsky 1991, Travis 1991, Hale & Keyser 1993, Li, 1993, 1995, van Hout 1998 among others). This paper is about the interaction in aspectuality between the main verb hata 'do' and its verbal noun object in the Korean verbal noun construction (i.e., VN-Acc-hata 'do'). I propose that the event-denoting verbal noun object serves to provide a (measurable) PATH/TERMINUS argument for the verb to be reinterpreted as denoting a telic event with an endpoint. As I am doing this, I reveal that the accusative case particle -(l)ul on verbal noun objects functions as a telicizer in the sense of Kratzer (2000), imposing a terminus on the atelic verbal noun objects and turning them into measurable path objects. My proposal thus accounts for the reason that the VN-Acc-hata 'do' construction in Korean is interpreted as telic, despite the atelic property of the main verb hata 'do'. (Korea University)
