The Structure of Verbal Nouns and the Complex Predicates in Korean

Abstract
In Korean VNs, two types of VNs such as phakoy 'destruction' and sengcang 'growth' show the different meanings according to three types of light verbs ha-ta 'do', sikhi-ta 'cause', and toy-ta 'be made'. That is, the causative light verb sikhi-ta cannot give rise to any change in argument structure in case that a transitive VN phakoy incorporates into the verb, whereas this verb introduces a new causer argument in case of an unaccusative VN like sengcang. This phenomenon can be explained by the well-defined syntax-morphology interface, also positing that VNs take a nominal structure embedding a syntactic VP. Sikhi-ta in incorporation forms derives a lexical causative by WF in the lexicon, and hence sikhi-ta cannot introduce its new argument in case of transitive VNs because of the constraint on the structure of VP regulated by Full Interpretation in LF. On the other hand, whether ha-ta is light or heavy is determined by the DP structure of a VN preceding it. Ha-ta comes to be a light verb only when the VN phrase preceding the verb is an NP or an NumP (non-DP) resulting in the percolation of its index to ha-ta and forming a complex predicate.
