Abstract

Yun, Suyeon. 2007. Phonological Patterns of the Glides in Arabic. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 32-4, 653-690. The distribution of the glides in Arabic is complicated: the glide can be eliminated, retained or vocalized depending on the context. This paper aims to offer an explicit formal analysis of all phonological patterns of the glides in Arabic. Rosenthall (2006) claims that the glide distribution in Arabic is determined by preferential parsing of the vocalic elements according to the ranking of Max-Feature constraints based on Correspondence Theory and Sympathy Theory. Although he considers only form 1 verbs, comparable data patterns can be seen from the other forms of verbs and other parts of speech. The present paper is distinct from the previous research in the following two points. First, this paper considers the whole range of data including glides. Second, the expanded data shows that the Sympathy-based analysis has to be revised, so I provide an alternative proposal. Adopting some new constraints such as stem faithfulness and position correspondence, the phonological patterns of the glides in Arabic can be explained without Sympathy. (Seoul National University)
