Phonetic Analyses of the Korean Glides [w] and [？]

Abstract
In the literature of Korean phonology, many researchers such as K.-D. Lee (1973) claim that in Korean the monophthongs [(C)y(C)]σ and [(C)ø(C)]σ are in free variation with the diphthongs [(C)wi(C)]σ and [(C)we(C)]σ, respectively. However, In my previous research (Yun 2003) I argue that they are not in free variation; the monophthongs do not exist in Modern Korean; the diphthongs should also be reanalyzed depending on syllabic structure; the [w] appears in syllable-initial position and the [ɥ] appears between a tautosyllabic consonant and a front vowel within a syllable. To prove this I compare the normalized F1 and F2 values of Korean [w] and [ɥ] with those of French [w], [ɥ], [y], and [ø] since French is known to have the round vowels [y] and [ø] as well as the glides [w] and [ɥ]. The results support my claim that Korean does not have the monophthongs [(C)y(C)]σ and [(C)ø(C)]σ, and the [ɥ] appears between a tautosyllabic consonant and a front vowel whereas the [w] appears elsewhere.
