Abstract

One of principles in Government phonology (henceforth GP) is the Projection Principle, which requires that government is defined in lexical representations and remains constant throughout a derivation. Kaye, Lowenstamm & Vergnaud (1985, henceforth KLV) propose the Projection Principle to account for the apparent indifference of consonant sequences to government relations in Tigrinya. However, Park & Michaels (1997) argue that the Projection Principle should be excluded from Government Phonology, analyzing Korean consonant cluster phenomena such as tensing and neutralization where the Projection Principle cannot hold. Following their idea, this paper investigates other crosslinguistic phenomena such as Billiri and the eastern Cushitic language where the Projection Principle cannot hold, and attempts to analyze the data in those languages with no Projection Principle.
