Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine how the meaning extension of the human body-part term ‘mok’ in Korean is made and how the direction of meaning extension is realized on the assumption that various meanings of a word constitute a category. It is important how central meanings should be prescribed in meaning extension, which has been frequently neglected in previous studies. Not until the central meaning of 'mok' is accurately prescribed, can we understand how and which constituents of central meanings extend to marginal meanings. It also has not been able to confirm that marginal meanings extend orderly and systematically though they look scattered in disorder. As a result, semantic field of ‘mok’ makes it possible to establish a section of lexical system in Korean language and the conceptual network of ‘mok’ to explain a section of the Korean national spirit.
