Abstract
Lee, Ponghyung. 2004. Korean Sonorant Modifications as Domain-Initial Strengthening. Korean Journal of Linguistics. 29-4, 607-633. This paper claims that the word initial prohibition of high sonority consonants in Korean happens as strengthening at the left edge of a prosodic category. I also justify the claim that modifications of target sonorants at lower levels at prosodic hierarchy imply those at the higher levels, in parallel with the proposal by Fougeron and Keating (1997). Strengthening at the left edge is not a matter of syllable, but correlates with the whole gamut of prosodic constituency. In this sense, the controversy over the proper characterization of n/ l avoidance in Korean in terms of syllable or word (Iverson and Kim 1987, Suh 1993, Iverson and Sohn 1994) is overridden by our prosodic analysis. When a segment is epenthesized, it tends to opt for the most insalient one in terms of perceptibility of listener, as proposed by Howe and Pulleyblank (2003). This view is likely to give a solution to the controversy that an epenthesized segment is not necessarily a default segment. I also propose that glides are inserted in Korean as strengthening: the disjuncture between roots and suffixes demands the strengthening by a glide insertion. (Daejeon University)
